Gordon Parks in Pittsburgh, 1944/1946 is an exhibition that offers an in-depth presentation of Gordon Parks’s (American, 1912–2006) photographs of the Penola, Inc. grease plant in Pittsburgh and its workers who supplied essential goods to US troops during World War II. This examination of an important chapter in Parks’s landmark career features more than 50 photographs that have not yet been seen by the public and explores a narrative that is seldom told but still resonates today.

Visual Identity

Zoe Zenghelis: Fields, Fragments, Fictions, presented in the galleries of the Heinz Architectural Center, is a solo exhibition that celebrates the artist’s work at the intersection of painting and spatial imagination.

The design methodology behind the exhibition intervenes with Zenghelis's practice in a speculative and narrative way. An invented line-based device appears as a navigation system, divider, and contemplative space for resettlement; it appears crossing the fold and unfolding, in between turns and glances, flips and pauses. We encourage visitors to explore the exhibition by following the relevance between Zenghelis's voice, images, colors, and words.

A former department store window dresser, Rafferty draws on her skills as a merchandiser to create alluring artworks that challenge stereotypical notions of beauty and gender. Her Make-up Testers incorporate photographs of colorful palettes to address the role of cosmetics and advertising imagery in creating unrealistic societal standards. Rafferty also uses images of mannequins to underscore the disconnect between how bodies are “supposed” to look versus how they actually look. The artist also presents a new site-specific mural, THE DEAD 20TH CENTURY (What ♥ was saved), which acts as a backdrop to several works and covers the largest wall in the gallery with thumbnail images of items for sale in online art, design, and furniture auctions.
